As winter fades and signs of spring begin to appear, Common Hazel is one of the first trees to signal the changing seasons.

Hazel is a vital part of woodland ecosystems, providing food and shelter for a wide range of wildlife. Its nuts, which ripen in late summer, are a favourite for squirrels, dormice, and birds such as woodpeckers.

Beyond its role in nature, Hazel has long been valued by people. Traditionally coppiced, its flexible wood was used for hurdles, baskets, walking sticks, and even divining rods. In folklore, Hazel was seen as a tree of wisdom and protection, believed to bring good luck and insight.

Next time you’re in the forest, keep an eye out for the swaying catkins of Common Hazel. Have you spotted one yet?
