One of the joys of walking in the forest at this time of year is spotting Scarlet Elf Cups (Sarcoscypha spp.) These striking little fungi, shaped like tiny red goblets, stand out brilliantly against the muted tones of winter. Nestled among moss and leaf litter, they bring a burst of colour to the woodland floor.
Scarlet Elf Cups thrive on damp, decaying wood, often found on fallen branches in moist, shaded areas. They play an important role in breaking down dead wood, helping to recycle nutrients back into the ecosystem.
If you’re out exploring this weekend, keep an eye out for these hidden treasures. They’re a wonderful reminder that even in the colder months, nature has its own kind of magic.
